Small Kitchen Layouts That Actually Work in Malaysian Homes

Galley, L-shape, or single run. The smart wet/dry split, and storage tricks that turn a tight Klang Valley kitchen into a workable one.

Compact modern kitchen with smart storage

Malaysian homes, especially condos and link houses, often have small kitchens. The good news: layout and storage matter more than floor area. A 60 sqft kitchen done well beats a 100 sqft kitchen done badly.

Pick the right layout

  • Galley (two parallel runs): efficient for narrow spaces
  • L-shape: frees a corner for a small table or movement
  • Single run with tall units: best for very tight condos

Use the wet/dry split

A Malaysian classic for a reason. A clean dry kitchen inside for light cooking and presentation, a wet kitchen (often at the rear or balcony) for heavy frying and washing. Keeps the main kitchen pristine and the home odour-free.

Storage tricks

  • Go full-height: take cabinets to the ceiling for extra storage
  • Tall pull-out units beat deep, hard-to-reach corner cabinets
  • Integrate the fridge, use slimline appliances
  • Light colours and handle-less doors make the space feel bigger

Frequently asked questions

Do I really need a wet and dry kitchen?

If you cook Malaysian food often, yes. Heavy frying and asam-based dishes will smoke up an enclosed dry kitchen fast. Even a small wet kitchen on the balcony keeps the main one clean.
